Abdominal migraine
  • Migraine is a neurological disease characterized by recurrent moderate to severe headaches often in association with a number of autonomic nervous system symptoms.
  • Abdominal migraine most common in children ages five-nine years old, but can occur in adults as well. 
  • Abdominal Migraine is a form of Migraine seen mainly in children. Abdominal migraine is a condition thought to be related to migraine .
  • Abdominal Migraine consists primarily of abdominal pain,  nausea, and vomiting.
  • In Abdominal migraine the pain occurs in the belly. Usually, it's near the navel or midline.It is often precipitated by the usual triggers of classic migraine.
  • It was recognized as a form of Migraine disease as links were made to other family members having Migraines and children who had this disorder grew into adults with Migraine with and without aura.
Abdominal migraine meaning-Abdominal syndrome
  • Abdominal migraine does not only refer to the episodes of abdominal pain but is a syndrome meaning that there are several symptoms that occur together.  It is believed to be associated with an abnormal interplay of certain hormones and chemicals that naturally occur in the body.Abdominal migraine is believed to affect about 9% to 15% of children and adolescents .
Causes of Abdominal migraine 

  • Exact causes is Abdominal Migraine is not known but some researchers believes abdominal migraine occurs because of abnormalities in level of two chemicals that is Histamine and serotonin.It is believed that fluctuations in the level of these two chemical is responsible for migraine headache .
  • Genetic factor also play important role in Abdominal migraine .More than 50 % of the patients have family history for Abdominal migraine .
  • Foods like chocolates ,chinese food,processed meats that contain chemicals like nitrites and MSG (monosodium glutamate) might triggers abdominal migraine .
Symptoms of Abdominal migraine 


What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Abdominal Migraines?
Symptoms of abdominal migraines may include:

  • Acute, severe, midline abdominal pain that is associated with nausea.The abdominal pain may last for as short as one hour or as long as three days.
  • Vomiting and Nausea
  • Inability to eat
  • Paleness (pallor)
Diagnosis of Abdominal migraine -How is abdominal migraine diagnosed?
As with any form of Migraine, there is no diagnostic test to confirm abdominal Migraine. Diagnosis is achieved by reviewing both family and patient medical history, evaluating the symptoms, and performing an examination to rule out other causes of the symptoms.

Other conditions that should be ruled out to arrive at a diagnosis of abdominal Migraine include:
  • Urogenital disorders, 
  • Peptic ulcer,
  • Duodenal obstruction, 
  • Gastroesophageal reflux, 
  •  Cholecystitis (gall bladder), 
  • Crohn's disease, and irritable bowel syndrome.


 If there is any alteration in consciousness, seizure disorders should also be ruled out.
 Electroencephalography (EEG) is sometimes done to rule out a seizure disorder as the cause of the symptoms .

Abdominal migraine treatment:What is the treatment for abdominal migraine?

There is no specific treatment for Abdominal Migraine because very little is known about these .Certains medications that is useful in treating abdominal migraine is not approved for use in children.The drugs that may offer some relief include tricyclic antidepressants, serotonin blockers and valproic acid.Other medication such as NSAIDs may be considered for use although aspirin should be avoided in children.

Medications to treat abdominal migraine

Types of medications that may be used to manage abdominal migraine include:
  • Ergotamine medications, also used for adults with migraine, are used to treat some childhood variants of migraine.
  • Sumatriptan (Imitrex, Alsuma), a member of the triptan class of drugs used to treat migraine in adults, has been used to treat some older children with abdominal migraine
  • The antihistamine cyproheptadine has been shown to be effective in some children with migraine variants.
  • Analgesic drugs, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) or acetaminophen
  • Tricyclic antidepressants and drugs that block the effects of serotonin have been used in some patients to decrease frequency of attacks.
  • Valproic acid (Depakote), an antiseizure medication, has been used to treat abdominal migraine.
  • Other aspects of treatment may include the administration of intravenous fluids if vomiting is severe, and the use of sedatives or antiemetic drugs.
Preventions for abdominal migraine 
Avoid food which increase chances of abdominal migraine food like chines food ,chocolates,foods which contain MSG (MonoSodium Glutamate).Maintain Healthy life style and manage stress.

Prognosis:What is the prognosis for abdominal migraine?
The prognosis for abdominal migraine is good; most children eventually stop having the attacks of abdominal pain. However, most children (about 70% in one study of 54 children) who have abdominal migraine go on to develop migraines in adulthood.
